the hanging tree

when i was a child, there was a story
a playground legend of sorts
of a man who lived in the forest, on the edge of the field
he took children away and they were never seen again
we used to scream at the top of our lungs,
"we saw him, we saw him, he had a chainsaw, he's coming! --
he murderded those missing kids, he sawed them to pieces", we claimed.

perhaps we were wrong about the cause of their demise.
